Chapter Nine

I should have seen it coming; but I didn’t, until it was too late.

They’d been hidden in the tree line, on the narrow access road that led to the Laverty property. As I drove down the lane, the trees on either side blocking my view of the surrounding countryside, it happened – two cars pulled out ahead of me, another two behind me, completely cutting off my chance of escape.

They were cruisers from the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department, rooftop lights flashing now that they’d sprung their trap, daring me to make a run for it.

Before I could decide what to do – if I ran, what would happen to Jolene? – the deputies were out of their vehicles, pistols and shotguns aimed over the hoods and trunks of their cruisers.

Shit.

I wasn’t sure if I was tired by the drive, or else had made the fatal mistake of relaxing when home was almost in sight, but there was no time for excuses; the fact was that the trap had been sprung, and it had caught me right in the middle of it. The question was, what the hell was I going to do about it?

I had the Glock with me, hidden under my leg, ready to be used in just this situation; the only thing was that I hadn’t expected the ambush to be led by the sheriff’s office. It was possible that they were on the take, but I couldn’t start blasting away at them just on the off-chance that they were dirty. And if I started shooting, so would they, and Jolene could well get killed in the crossfire.

“Get out of the vehicle!” a voice came over the loudhailer. “Hands where we can see them!”

Jolene’s eyes were wide, like a deer caught in the headlights. “Colt, what are we going to do?” she whispered. “What the hell are we going to do?”

“Take this phone,” I said, not wanting to have it on me if they took me to the station, “and start filming, okay? Let’s get these sons of bitches on camera, keep them honest.”

“But what are you –”

“Take this too,” I said, passing her the Glock under the cover of the dashboard, where the deputies couldn’t see it. “Don’t use it unless you have to. I’m going to get out of the car, and if they start shooting at me, just do your best to get out of here, okay? If they just arrest me, you’ll probably be safe – hide the gun, and do what they say.”

“But –”

“Start filming. Now,” I said, and then I opened my car door, hands high in the air as I left the relative safety of the vehicle, exposing myself to the armed deputies, wondering if they were all just going to open fire the moment they got a clear target.

My gut told me they wouldn’t though – there were eight deputies present, possibly the whole department, and what would be the chances that all eight would be okay with committing
